Young Entrepreneurs in Yaounde are transforming discarded tires into beautiful pieces-painted in bright green,purple and yellow with woven or upholsted seats suitable for homes, gardens and outdoor spaces,giving essence to waste.

Talking to Ndode’s blog,artisants say They  collect used car tires from garages, roadsides, or dumps. They clean them thoroughly, cut and reshape the rubber using basic tools, then reinforce the structure with metal frames or wooden legs for stability. The tires are often stacked, bent, or combined to form seats, armrests, and bases. Finally, they receive weather-resistant paint and cushions or woven elements for comfort.

Entrepreneurs  have turned this into a viable business, producing chairs, stools, tables, and ottomans. Similar initiatives exist in Douala and Buea,, where small workshops turn “trash” into trendy, affordable furniture. Young people and women, mainly  single mothers, according to Jerry, an artisan says he earns  income from collection, crafting, and sales. He claims to have processed hundreds of tires from a home-based workshop.

He goes further to explain that the furniture is durable. “ Tire chairs are sturdy, weather-resistant, and cheaper than imported alternatives — ideal for outdoor use in our  tropical climate” he said. He further revealed that local innovation is proof of import substitution. “It builds skills in design and craftsmanship, inspiring more circular economy models in urban areas facing rapid population growth and waste challenges, thereby being a pathway for import substitution as we produce what we consume and consume what we produce.

Initiatives like these in  align with global pushes for sustainable waste management. They reduce environmental hazards while empowering local creators — turning a pollution problem into jobs, beautiful objects, and community pride.

Environmentalists have argued that this creative transformation proves that sustainability can be both practical and beautiful. One tire at a time, Cameroon’s makers are showing the world how to sit sustainably.
